Gaja's 1996 Darmagi is terrific. In fact, the 1996 is one of the best vintages of Darmagi I can remember tasting. Varietally expressive, with tons of Cabernet Sauvignon character, the 1996 makes a very strong case for itself, something that isn't always true. A host of mocha, plum, lavender and spice notes flesh out in this super-expressive, intense Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1996 is simply striking in every way.

The outstanding 1996 Darmaggi Cabernet Sauvignon is a structured, dense, black/purple-colored wine with excellent cassis fruit, and an unevolved, but promising personality. There are copious quantities of tannin, a massive mid-palate, and a sweet, long finish. However, it will require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.
